Toronto guitarist Margaret Stowe has eclectic taste. Her original jazz-based music can better be categorized as “other”, as it encompasses a multi-genre world of influence. She embraces elements of world music, folk, blues, funk and beyond, but always with a jazz sensibility and perspective. It is one thing, original. Though her style is uniquely her own, her influences span the gamut, from Robert Fripp to Keith Jarrett, John Hammond to Jim Hall, Joe Pass, John Scofield, Emily Remler and Laurie Anderson. Her performances sometimes include ambience, free improv and spoken word. She has four CDs of original music - THINGS I DO, RESONANCE (originals for 2 guitars with guitarist/Juno-nominated composer Oliver Whitehead),ADVENTURES OF THE RED GUITAR, with esteemed guests including Kathryn Moses (Chuck Mangione, Bruce Cockburn), multiple Juno winner Richard Underhill (Shuffle Demons) and international roots icon Harry Manx and her NEW album MELLO JELLO features just guitar, originals, improvisations and familiar tunes with the theme of unstress.  

Margaret Stowe performs all over Canada and Europe. She has performed and recorded with a host of Canadian/International artists including Harry Manx, Ellen McIlwaine, Rita Chiarelli, Jane Bunnett, Molly Johnson, Salome Bey, Serena Ryder, Dawn Tyler Watson, Mose Scarlett, Lorraine Segato, Amos Garrett, Paul Shafer, Tom Wilson, Shakura S'Aida, Sue Foley, and Big Rude Jake. Margaret is listed in the Canadian Encylopedia of Music under Guitarists of Note. Margaret has performed in some very infamous locations including The Louvre Paris France and CBGB's New York City. She has played at major clubs and jazz and jazz/blues festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, BlueBalls Lucerne Switzerland, Cognac Blues Passion France, Boqui Jazz Madrid, U Malehu Glena Praque, Bflat Berlin and dozens of others. In Oct 2006, she made the Prague Post’s inside cover “PICKS Of The Week” with her own quartet. She was recently interviewed and performed on both Vallee FM Radio Paris France and Radio Nacional de Espana Madrid. Margaret Stowe Band performs at festivals, clubs and events throughout the year. A classically trained musician, her first musical forays were in the area of folk and roots music. Coming out of university she entering the folk world, and her introduction to jazz came through her exposure to ”newgrass” music, a fusion of jazz and bluegrass. While working for the Grey Bruce Arts Council she researched music in the area, did a radio show on Woodie Guthrie and was in on the groupfloor of the Summerfolk Music Festival now in its 3rd decade. She then began playing and studying jazz and for years she worked as an in demand sideperson and bandleader playing mainstream jazz, jazz fusion and rhythm & blues. She has done workshops with guitar greats Robert Fripp, Joe Pass and Duke Robillard. She also worked in musical theatre including 2 runs of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris at Canada’s National Arts Centre. She has performed with several symphony orchestras and was a featured guitarist with Orchestra London’s “Neck and Neck” and Orchestra Toronto’s Eine Kleine Klezmermusik. She wrote an orchestra show You Gotta Reap Just What You Sow, featuring music of the great blues women. She has taught at the National Guitar Workshop, Toronto Guitar Workshop, Waterloo Guitar Summit and Hornby Island Workshop and the Toronto School Board. Her S’Women In Blues shows are always in demand and feature top Canadian female jazz and r&b musicians. She plays guitar and writes band arrangements for the Toronto Blues Society’s Women’s Blue Revue, recording annual concerts for CBC RADIO at Toronto’s famed Massey Hall. Margaret performs with the Hot Latkes Klezmer Band and the London (Canada) production of Paul Winter’s Missa Gaia Earth Mass. She can also be found on 2 recent CBC RADIO CD recordings, TBS Women’s Blues Revue “Live" (Massey Hall), “CBC Saturday Night Blues 20 Years”; and Six Strings North of the Border from Borealis Records featuring top Canadian guitarists.
